Ua Huka

Horse Island

In the Marquesas, Ua Huka is a wild, remote and almost inaccessible island:

Atypical landscapes

Ua Huka bears no resemblance to the other Marquesas Islands, where nature is much less dense and vegetated. On the contrary, your eyes will marvel at the colorful lands, valleys and rocks... Hiking enthusiasts will be in their element, and for the less adventurous, guided 4x4 tours will allow them to enjoy the island's wonders effortlessly.

Hikes and immersions with wild horses

Its desert-tinged plateaus offer glimpses of wild horses and goats that cover the entire territory. Whether you come directly to your lodge, where most of the time horses are already being bred, or take a horseback ride, you can enjoy discovering the island alongside these great animals, the local emblem. The capture and domestication of horses is a traditional Marquesan practice.

UA HUKA, the island for you?

French heritage, Polynesian culture and unforgettable landscapes!

Ua Huka is famous for its dry soil and its landscapes. Wild horses gallop across this desert-colored land and wild goats climb along the plains of this mystical Pacific island. Ua Huka invites the traveller to discover an isolated, unspoilt world where the ancestors are an integral part of the daily life of the inhabitants.

Despite being the smallest island in the archipelago, Ua Huka stands out not only for its unique landscape of desert and greenery, but also for its cultural richness. It boasts the world's richest archaeological museum, immersing you in the history of the Marquesans, their tools and their arts. The island is also a place for lovers of handicrafts, with a woodcarving center where you can take home a beautiful, authentic and unique souvenir in your suitcase. Iconic sites to visit during your stay on Ua Huka include the communal museum and craft center, the sea museum, the Meiaute tiki and the island arboretum, where you can discover local plants and fruits.

Both Ua Huka and Ua Pou have airports, but unfortunately they don't operate frequent flights. Flights are mainly for locals, and it's very difficult today to integrate a land-based visit to Ua Huka and Ua Pou, despite their undoubted interest. To date, the ARANUI cruise remains the best option for a guaranteed visit.
