Tubuai

Meet the whales

Within the Australs, Tubuai is the capital of the archipelago:

A landscape of land and sea

Tubuai offers strong land potential. Nature lovers and hikers will be seduced by its relief. And for sea lovers? Tubuai's lagoon is equally magnificent, dotted with heavenly motu. The island is also a meeting place for whales between July and November.

A wealth of culture and history

As is the case throughout the Austral archipelago, Tubuai is no exception with its incredible craftsmanship: pandanus weaving is iconic here, and you can't leave without a basket or hat. The island is home to cultural curiosities such as marae (temples) and Fort George, which takes us back to the history of the Bounty mutineers.

Tubuai, the island for you?

The Australs must-see

Tubuai is the largest island in the archipelago, and is home to the archipelago's main public and economic services. Its reef is scattered between fine stones and volcanic rocks. The immense lagoon, almost twice the size of the island itself, offers 85 km² of pure aquatic pleasure. The mild climate makes these islands ideal for agriculture. Lilies are grown for export and can be seen in fields as far as the eye can see. Visits to the island's viewpoints and motu, whale watching in season, scuba diving and historical discoveries (it was here that Christian Fletcher and the Bounty mutineers attempted to settle unsuccessfully in 1789) are Tubuai's must-sees.

The great difficulty of this island, which is also its great drawback, is the internal flights to reach it: sometimes unpredictable, poorly served airport with few rotations and very few connections between the islands of the same archipelago without going back via Tahiti; visiting Tubuai means adapting to the fixed flight schedule. But once you've got over that hurdle, you're in for a real adventure, with hikes, handicrafts and sea outings.
