Rimatara

The island of vini

In the Austral Islands, Rimatara is a small island full of surprises for its visitors:

Its heavenly lagoon

Rimatara offers its travelers an unrivalled farniente and bathing experience. With its various bays and beaches, the island is the ideal place to enjoy Polynesia's famous shades of blue: the natural bay of Mutuaura, Le bain des vierges...

A wealth of culture and birdlife

As is the case throughout the Austral archipelago, Rimatara is no exception for its incredible craftsmanship: pandanus weaving is iconic here, and you can't leave without a basket or hat. The island is also home to a bird known as the Lori de Khul or vini 'ura. It's a small red and green parakeet in danger of extinction.

Rimatara, the island for you?

A little-visited island

Although Rimatara is the smallest of the Austral Islands, it has a special charm, with many hidden beauties. In the hollow of this circular island, time seems to stand still. With only a small lagoon, the island is also one of the last shelters of an endangered bird species, the Lori de Khul or vini 'ura, a bird whose colorful feathers light up Rimatara's sky.

The great difficulty of this island, which is also its great drawback, is the internal flights to reach it: sometimes unpredictable, poorly served airport with few rotations and very few connections between the islands of the same archipelago without going back via Tahiti; visiting Rimatara means adapting to the fixed flight schedule. But once you've got over that hurdle, you're in for a real adventure, with walks, crafts and sea outings.

The main attraction of this island is swimming in the two bays, cycling in the surrounding area, whale watching in season, and discovering the Mutuaura temple.
