Maupiti

Little Bora Bora

Known for its authenticity, Maupiti will delight travellers for several reasons:

Wild beaches and motu

The lagoon is deep blue, shallow in places. Its shades of blue are what make it so famous!

Its manta ray spot

Manta are found more frequently than elsewhere (Taha'a, Tikehau, Bora Bora), and Maupiti is one of them.

MAUPITI, the island for you?

The island for lovers of calm and authenticity, and adventurers

It's a bit like "Little Bora": magnificent lagoons, superb mountains, Manta spots. And at the same time, it's nothing like its big sister, since you won't find any hotels here, only charming guesthouses. Nature is wilder here, and you're in for a completely different experience. Be warned, however, this is not an island I recommend to all travellers:

1/ The quality of accommodation on the island is rustic: the value for money is rather high, the accommodation is among the simplest and wildest in Polynesia, the infrastructure is ageing, and certain points are less present than elsewhere (hot water, housekeeping, modern facilities such as TV and air conditioning). If you're looking for modern comforts, this is not the island for you.

2/ The island is difficult to access by transport. The pass is impassable by boat almost every other time, and the airstrip is 100m too short, making it impossible to get to or from the island in case of rain (and Polynesian weather is rainy quite often). There is a 30% chance of cancellation on flights to Maupiti. Please note that travel insurance doesn't cover weather clauses AND guesthouses won't reimburse room cancellations if your plane can't land on the island. In other words, you'll have to pay extra for your last-minute stay on the transit island if you don't arrive at your destination, and you won't be reimbursed for the unused part of your stay in Maupiti. It's a risk you need to be aware of, as it happens frequently. That's why we tend to recommend other places that are just as authentic, if not more so, since Polynesia is made up of 118 islands.

Accommodation in MAUPITI

On this island, you won't find an unlimited supply of accommodation, just boarding houses. In fact, the offer is so limited that accommodation is often fully booked 1 year in advance:

  • Guesthouses: Papahani and Fare Pae'ao are the two guesthouses we are currently selling, and which we feel stand out from the rest in terms of quality.
