Mangareva

The Gambier archipelago

Mangareva, the central point for exploring the Gambier Islands:

His culture

As the center of Catholicism in Polynesia, the people of Mangareva have retained their traditional Polynesian lifestyle, and the island has become an important source of supply for the pearling industry of Tahiti Et Ses Îles. To visit the Gambier archipelago is to become immersed in Polynesian culture.

Simple, authentic accommodation

It's an emblematic place in Polynesia, and even the locals dream of staying there for a total reconnection with the mana on site. And yet, the Gambier Islands are not on the tourist trail, and very few travelers venture there.

Mangareva, the island for you?

Cradle of Polynesian culture

Polynesian mythology tells us that Mangareva was raised from the ocean floor by the demigod Maui. Mangareva's mountains rise up from the surrounding islands and luminous lagoon like a great, magnificent cathedral.

The Gambier archipelago is actually made up of 17 islands and motus, surrounded by a coral reef more than 80 km in circumference. Mangareva, however, is the only permanently inhabited island. The cool season is in July and August, when temperatures reach 15°C, while the rest of the year is as hot as in the other archipelagos.

Your host has a number of experiences in store for you: a trip to the capital Rikitea, hikes in the mountains to reach different viewpoints, a visit to St. Michael's Cathedral, the Rouru convent, Aukena and Taravai islands accessible by boat...
