Hiva Oa

In the footsteps of Gauguin and Brel

In the Marquesas, Hiva Oa is one of the archipelago's main islands:

French history

The island was the final resting place of two artists of French heritage: Jacques BREL and Paul GAUGUIN. Having both fallen in love with Hiva Oa and the Marquesas, they are buried on the island, and their tombs are among the must-sees on the island. But Hiva Oa's cultural heritage is equally strong, with archaeological sites, tikis and marae.

Hiking and beaches

Hiva Oa is the perfect destination for nature lovers and hikers, with its panoramic views, mountains and valleys... But ocean lovers won't be outdone, either, with swimming in the bays and wild beaches, or the possibility of visiting Tahuata Island from Hiva Oa for a more idle moment, in addition to its extraordinary handicrafts.

HIVA OA, the island for you?

French heritage, Polynesian culture and unforgettable landscapes!

The island is relentlessly governed by nature, green, invasive and luminous to the point where roads and houses fade into the background, blending into the environment. The island's rugged landscapes blend sharp ridges, peaks and scattered valleys with archaeological sites and ruins. Hiva Oa boasts the largest tiki statues in Tahiti & Her Islands. It's also the island where two famous artists chose to live out their lives: painter Paul Gauguin and poet, singer and actor Jacques Brel.

The island offers plenty to discover: the village of Atuona and the Gauguin center/Brel museum, hikes to Mont Temetiu, the Tahauku valley, the Brel and Gauguin cemetery, the Upeke archaeological site and the great Tikis of Puamau, the flower-filled village of Hanaiapa and the village of Hanatekuua; but also more remote excursions with the island of Tahuata and its bone-carving skills!

Accommodation on Hiva Oa

On this island, you'll find a lodge and only guesthouses, immersing you in the surrounding authenticity:

  • 3-star lodge: The Hanakee Lodge is the island's "comfort" option, with packages that include the island's iconic tours.
  • Guesthouses: my favorite is Temetiu village for its warm welcome, or the Kanahau guesthouse and Relais Moehau.
